Front of House and Technician Support role
This is a varied role combining front of house, customer service, venue operations and technical support. You’ll be one of the first points of contact for audiences, artists and hirers, while also providing practical technical support across sound, lighting and AV.
We’re looking for someone who knows their way around a theatre environment and has experience with sound systems, digital sound mixing, theatre lighting, rigging and operation. You’ll need to be confident working independently, solving problems and supporting hirers safely and effectively.

Job Purpose
The Front of House & Technician Support will be the first point of welcome for visitors, hirers, and artists at Tramshed. You will help ensure that every person who comes through our doors, whether a community group, a professional company, or an audience member, has a safe, positive, and memorable experience. Alongside your front-facing duties you will also provide basic technical support, maintain the technician booth and support the events and hires coordinator with any technical questions for hires.
This role would be particularly well suited to a recent graduate or someone seeking their first position within a venue, events, or technical theatre environment, offering an excellent opportunity to develop front of house, customer service, venue operations, and technical production skills within a busy and active arts venue. Equally, the role may appeal to experienced technicians or venue professionals looking for a more balanced and customer-focused position that allows them to remain connected to live events and the arts sector without the demands of a full-time technical role. In addition to the contracted responsibilities, opportunities for additional technician work on events and performances will be offered on a freelance basis, subject to operational requirements. Any freelance technical work undertaken outside the scope of this role will be agreed in advance with the line manager, with rates confirmed prior to the engagement.
Principal Responsibilities
Technical Support
Support the basic setup and reset of sound, lighting, and AV equipment for hirers and events – this includes basic mic set ups or setting up bluetooth speakers, projector and setting up laptop (office one), x2 basic settings on lighting desk. All specs to be defined in hire agreements
Assist hirers in using equipment in the studio and theatre spaces confidently and safely
Carry out routine visual checks of equipment and report any concerns or faults to the line manager or lead technician promptly – anything requiring work to the rig or takes you away for more than hour will be done during technical hours.
Help maintain accurate records of equipment use and flag any maintenance needs
Support with PAT testing of any old and new electrical equipment - designated day will be set when FOH duties are less demanding.
Support Events and Hires Coordinator with technical questions received from hires and questions from freelance technicians
Ensure Technician booth is kept organised, tidy, and any stock or equipment requirements are actioned with your line manager
Front of House & Box Office
Act as the primary reception and information point for the venue, providing a warm and professional welcome to all visitors, hirers, and members of the public
Operate the box office and ticketing systems, processing ticket sales accurately in person, by phone, and online
Maintain a thorough knowledge of all events, classes, and programmes to enable excellent customer service and confidently promote Tramshed's offer
Correctly apply membership offers, discounts, and any fundraising initiatives
Monitor and manage the info@ and reception@ email inboxes, responding promptly and professionally and keeping them well organised
Manage the signing in/out procedure for all staff and building users
Handle all cash, card, and cheque transactions securely and accurately
Keep a daily log as a handover record and means of capturing visitor feedback
Provide box office reports to relevant departments as required
Support bar operations during events where the bar is open

Building Operations
Conduct regular building walks, checking spaces are cleared, supplies are stocked, and routine health and safety checks are completed
Ensure all spaces are clean, tidy, and correctly laid out ahead of hires and events
Carry out regular stock checks of bar stock, cleaning supplies, and stationery, placing orders as directed by your line manager
Support hirers and community members with questions about facilities, fire safety, and general use of the building
Maintain the reception area as a welcoming, safe, and well-presented space
Keep storage areas and communal spaces clean, tidy, and organised
Assist with evacuation procedures in the event of an emergency
Communications & Administration
Liaise across departments to ensure smooth communication and handover of information
Communicate problems, queries, or incidents to the Events and Hires Coordinator or Operations Director
Liaise with touring companies and event organisers to provide sales information and general venue details
Support marketing activities and protect the Tramshed brand in all communications
Ensure Tramshed's Data Protection Policy is applied consistently at the box office and front of house
Uphold all Tramshed ticketing and building-use policies
Essential Skills
Essential FOH criteria

Essential Technician criteria
Experience of using sound systems in a theatre setting, including digital sound mixing & live music
Experience of theatre lighting, rigging and focussing, programming and operating
Knowledge of electrical and distribution systems in the context of a theatre venue
Able to work independently and seek support when required
Excellent problem-solving abilities
Understanding of Risk Assessment
Desire to work in a busy, multi-arts creative environment
Desirable FOH criteria
Experience of box office or digital ticketing systems (e.g. Eventbrite or similar)
Previous switchboard or reception experience
Desirable Technician criteria
Specific experience with Behringer X32 digital sound desk or similar
Specific experience of programming Avolites Quartz lighting console
Production Management/ Stage Management
NIC/EIC qualification
Qualification in technical theatre
General Terms and Conditions
Hours - Part time — Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Sunday. Hours specified in advance by line manager on a rota basis, including evenings. Extra hours agreed with line manager and returned as time in lieu.
Salary - £15 per hour
Holidays - 25 days per annum pro rata, increasing by one day per full year served to a maximum of 30 days
Probation - Initial 1 month probation period
Notice - 4 weeks' notice either side
Pension - 3% matched pension contribution to NEST after qualifying period

Normal place of work is the Tramshed building in Woolwich. Additional sites may be required and will be discussed with your line manager in advance.
